07/05/10 – The Weapon used by Shaytaan at Jumu’a

“Then I [shaytan] will come to them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].” [Quran 7: 16-17]

30/04/10 – The Weapon against Shaytaan at Jumu’a

O ye who believe! Come, all of you, into submission (unto Him); and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Lo! he is an open enemy for you. [Qur'an 2:208]

Those who fear Allah, when a thought of evil from Satan assaults them, bring Allah to remembrance, when lo! they see (aright)! [Qur'an 7:201]

BBC – Muslim students in London university prayer room row

A group of Muslim students at City University pray on the street

By Poonam Taneja
BBC Asian Network

Some Muslim students at City University in London are praying in the street in a row over prayer room facilities.

“Our needs have been taken away” – City University’s Islamic society president Saleh Patel

The university closed a prayer room after Muslim students were attacked in November. A new multi-faith room was opened the following month.

A group of Muslim students now refuse to use the facility as they say they cannot pray in a multi-faith room.

The university says it goes against its philosophy to provide a room for just Islamic students.

‘Secular organisation’

“We felt that the provision of a dedicated prayer facility to a sub-section of our Islamic students did not fit with our university’s values,” said Professor Julius Weinberg, who is the acting vice-chancellor at City University.

“We’re a secular organisation. Our university values statement says that we will not discriminate and having a dedicated prayer room actually went fundamentally against the core values of the organisation.”

The prayer room was moved for safety reasons after a group of Muslim students were attacked by local youths, in what police said was a racist incident.

As well as worshipping on the street for the past few weeks, some students have also held prayers in lecture-rooms, corridors and the library.

“Our needs have been taken away,” said Saleh Patel, president of one of the Islamic societies at the university.

“Our prayer room has been taken away. We’ve been forced to pray outside.

“Our sisters have nowhere comfortable to go to. The prayer room used to be a place where they were comfortable and able to take off their veils.”

However, when it comes to using a multi-faith room to pray not all Muslims subscribe to the view that they cannot use it and even City University’s Islamic Society concedes that some Islamic scholars disagree with this interpretation.

“There are many Muslim students belonging to another Islamic society who are very happy to use the shared faith facility we’ve provided and now feel more supported by the university,” said Professor Weinberg.

26/03/10 – Steadfastness at Jumu’a

“Say I believe in Allah, then be steadfast upon it”. [Sahih Muslim]

Yes we do not have a prayer room, but remember the whole earth is a prayer place for us so we will continue to establish prayers InshaAllah!

Yes brothers will be leaving, but remember men did not make this religion, rather this religion made men…so by Allah, the eternal, the absolute, this religion will prevail!

“In the case of those who say, “Our Lord is Allah”, and, further, stand straight and steadfast, the angels descend upon them saying, “Fear not!”, “Nor grieve! but receive the Glad Tidings of Paradise, that which you were promised!” [Qur'an 41:30]

19/03/10 – Reliance in Allah at Jumu’a

“Say: ‘Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us: He is our protector’: and on Allah let the Believers put their trust.” [Qur'an 9:51]

Let it be known that Islam is not the religion of paper, nor a religion bound to homes, rather it is a religion that changes hearts and develops characters so no doubt it will prevail.

Yes we have lost our prayer room, but no doubt the brotherhood has strengthened as Brothers MashaAllah have remained firm upon the deen.

12/03/10 – Prophet Muhammad S.A.W at Jumu’a

“And We have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the worlds.” [Quran 21:107]

Islam is the only religion on the face of the Earth to believe in Jesus, after Christianity, but not only that, Muslims also believe in Adam, Solomon, Abraham, Moses, Noah, David, Lot, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Jonah, John the baptist amongst the many. All these Prophets peace be upon them all, have always worshiped one God and promoted the worship of One God, for a specific time period. It is indeed the final prophet who is to be followed until the end of time, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him who came with the same message, “yourLord, is but one Lord”.

The Muslims still without a prayer room once again gathered to witness the raindrops be placed by Angels before the Sun began to shine, and listened to find out more about the final Prophet peace be upon him.

The Muslims, mashaAllah, week in week out, in order to reduce or even work to eradicate any inconvenience have always tried to keep the pavements clear enough for passer-bys to walk through, we apologise if any inconvenience was caused but we remind you this is not a protest but an action done without choice.

Phase 2: On The Block!

AA

Just to keep everyone updated we Muslims are still stranded in the middle of nowhere without a dedicated place to pray, and it seems the university don’t want to change their stance, wallahu ‘alam.

Remember the quote of our great Sheikh when he said:

“It is the sunnah of Allah, that whenever He wants to establish his deen, He places it in front of it those who oppose it” [Sheikh ul-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah]

Indeed this statement is nothing but the truth, because Wallah Alahmdulillah, thumma Alhamdulillah, even though our principles and foundations have been attacked, we have found ourselves in the best position for da’wah. Those outside Islam can now witness the worship of Allah being established and can now also witness the words of Allah being echoed. SubhanAllah. So let it be known us Muslims will continue to strive to find a place to pray and will never as a nation of truth allow ourselves nor our beliefs to be trampled upon InshaAllah.

Many Muslims are praying around campus where they can find space including inside the library, outside Northampton Square, along the corridors and what not MashaAllah. May Allah keep them firm upon this, ameen. In addition to that however, we would advise every Muslim to try and also do the following:

  • Continue to show your displeasure through phone, email etc
  • Let your parents know of the difficulty you’re facing because obviously they sent you to this university believing a suitable and separate prayer facility has been provided for your needs. Ask them to call in and write too.
  • The foreign students should also contact their embassies

It may be the case that we need to take further steps if the university do not feel it is necessary to provide for the needs of the Muslims.

We remind the university that we will not compromise on our faith – the prayer is a fundamental aspect of Islam and we will continue to establish it, whether it be inside the university, outside, rain or shine. We will stand shoulder to shoulder, feet to feet and glorify the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth!

05/03/10 – Mercy at Jumu’a

…”Allah who is free from all wants, and free from all needs, has made it an obligation upon himself that His Mercy overpowers his anger.” The mercy of Allah was the topic showered through the Khutbah on Friday. However, don’t worry the punishment wasn’t forgotten as we were reminded “you can’t run and you can’t hide” because the whole earth is under His command.

Once again Muslims at City had to perform weekly jumu’a outside in their numbers as no suitable facility has yet been provided.

We remind ourselves that

“There is no might, nor strength except with Allah”

and it is He who has allowed us to continue jumu’a like this walhamdulillah.

We also remind ourselves that

“You (Allah) alone we worship and You (Allah) alone we ask for help” [Qur'an 1:5]

So it is He that we should all turn to first and foremost, thanking Him for what He, the Most Wise, has given us and then with our duas ask Him to provide us with a room of prayer. Whatever he decrees we shall be pleased with but lets keep the duas continuous InshaAllah as the dua is the weapon of the believer.

26/02/10 – Parents at Jumu’a

The world is large and wide enough for everyone to worship the One Lord, Allah…yet there remains no space for old age homes in Islam. Subhanallah.

Many a time we remember to love and respect our friends, colleagues, teachers and what not but forget to be dutiful towards the Mother who bore us for 9 months, free of charge; who spent sleepless nights for us, free of charge; who fed us, free of charge; who clothed us free of charge. Our prayer room has been lost but Alhamdulillah we were able to establish our duty towards Allah in great numbers and be reminded of our duties towards our parents with a heart softening khutbah, mashaAllah.

The weather forecast did predict rain, yet brothers remained steadfast and mashaAllah still came to the Jumu’a to worship their creator. And Allah is the best of planners, He let the sun shine in glory during the khutbah.

How can you expect the Muslims to forgo the fundamentals of their faith when you offer us nothing whilst Allah offers us Jannah, Paradise?! We will continue to strive for the establishment of a suitable, permanent prayer room. Every day, the black, the white, the yellow and the brown have stood and inshaAllah will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder to worship their Lord…so those who have taken our prayer room away will bear witness that this Ummah, this nation, is a nation that bears patiently and never gives up in their worship of Allah, The Most Mighty, The Majestic.

On the authority of Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan (May Allah be pleased with him) it is related that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said,

“How amazing is the affair of the believer. There is good for him in everything and that is for no one but the believer. If good times come his way, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him, and if hardship comes his way, he endures it patiently and that is better for him.” [Muslim]

An Open Letter to University students & staff by the Muslims of City University

We begin in the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the One Who Bestows His Mercy

An Open Letter to University students & staff by the Muslims of City University

Following the Acting Vice Chancellor’s email sent to university staff and students regarding the congregation of Muslims in the vicinity of Northampton Square on Friday 19th February 2010, the Muslim students of City University feel some points of clarification are necessary in order to portray a more balanced view of the situation.

Firstly, we wish to profess our immense gratitude to the university for their genuine concern in meeting the needs of a vast number of university students and staff. We appreciate that this is highly time consuming, given the internal and external pressures they must be under on a day-to-day basis. We appreciate that they have allotted much time to discuss this issue with us, and we anticipate that an amiable solution will soon be found.

Please rest assured that what ensued on Friday was by no means a demonstration, as it was referred to by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Julius Wienberg. Rather, it is an obligation upon every Muslim male to attend the Friday prayer [Jumu’ah]; whilst the sermon beforehand and a congregational gathering are conditions necessary to validate the Friday prayer. So in light of this, it should be understood that the speech, gathering and prayer were all performed as an obligatory religious duty, one that has been fulfilled at the university for many years. The only difference on this occasion was that usually, the Jumu’ah Prayer is held in the prayer room of the Gloucester Building, but unfortunately, that was not possible on this occasion as the university had decided to lock these rooms, consequently leaving the Muslim students and staff with no sufficient place to perform their obligatory prayers. It is worth mentioning here that we have never had, nor would we ever have, any qualms with people of other persuasions coming to listen to the sermon. In fact, we would encourage it.

Following the incidents last November, where Muslims students were attacked, the university and Islamic Society worked together to reach an appropriate solution to avoid such events from befalling again. The University reassured the Muslims that they were committed to establishing an adequate prayer room for Muslims in the long term, but that for the foreseeable future they would look to move us temporarily to a more central location, with adequate facilities. A proposal was made and agreed to. However, subsequent changes made by the university to the initial plan resulted in a meeting between ourselves and the university on the 17th of December 2009, where, on behalf of the Muslims, we informed the university that the latest alterations – which included the size of the rooms drastically decreasing, limited accessibility, and rooms now becoming ‘multi-faith’ – would be wholly inadequate for the Muslim population at the university. This is because a vast number of Muslim scholars throughout history believe it is impermissible for Muslims to offer prayers in a place where other than our Lord, Allah, is worshipped. Aside from the religious perspective, even logistically we believe it is impossible for us to have limited access to a prayer facility when we observe a minimum of three, out of five, prayers throughout the day at university, each within its prescribed time. We clearly informed the university that the latest adaptation, would not be adequate and that the Muslim students and staff would not be able to use such facilities for the various reasons mentioned above.

Despite this, the University proceeded with its plan, knowing that we would not be using the alternative rooms. The Acting Vice-Chancellor mentioned that they have provided rooms to be used by all the faith communities for prayer and reflection, with changing facilities adapted for Wudu (Islamic Ablution) in the “heart of the University”. If the location of these rooms on the lower levels of the Drysdale building, is in the heart of the University, then truly our University is in a sorry state. It is our sincere belief that the University would be embarrassed to show the area to prospective students, yet sending hundreds of current students there is being made to sound like an act of goodwill. In addition, many of the faith societies oppose the nature of these rooms, and foresee many difficulties in the practicality of the University’s suggestions.

Furthermore, the Director of Services for Students, John Tibble, outlined in his interview with the press on Friday the 19th of February, that the new multi-faith facilities only accommodate a maximum of 40 students per room at any one time. As mentioned earlier, the sermon and gathering are both prerequisites of the obligatory Friday prayer, so it needs to be asked, how many sets of sermons and prayers will be conducted for each set of 80 people? As was made evident in Northampton Square on Friday, the number of males that attend the Jumu’ah prayer easily surpasses 200, on average. So that would have to be a minimum of 3 lots of sermon-and-prayer in these new facilities. This, in addition to the fact that the time for the Friday prayer is limited, so it would be impossible to have 3 satisfactory sermons and prayers within the space of approximately 2 hours. Also what about the daily congregational prayers throughout the week which normally consist of 45-60 people? It could be said that the remainder of students exceeding the initial 40 can go to easily commutable mosques, the nearest being East London Mosque which is 39 minutes away via bus. Furthermore, the changing facilities provided have had no modifications that would be of benefit to the performance of ablution. In fact the modifications are a health risk to students and staff members should they use them. These are only some of the many problems with the provisions provided.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor mentioned that the University had consulted with Muslim scholars, however at a meeting held between Muslim students and University officials, the University revealed that the scholars consulted were from East London Mosque, Whitechapel. When asked to provide a name(s), the University officials informed us that they would get back to us. Since then several meetings have taken place between Muslim students and University officials, and upon questioning the name(s) of these Muslim scholars, University officials still fail to provide any. Therefore the Muslim students of City University spoke with the management of East London Mosque and asked whether City University had been in contact with any of their scholars, and the management categorically denied the claim of the University and stated that they are willing to issue a written statement in support of this.

The University has claimed that “many” of the Muslim students are using the new facilities, however in reality, the vast majority of the Muslim students and staff members are not using the refurbished squash courts, as the Jumu’ah prayer on Friday and the daily prayers held all over the University campus demonstrate. With regards to safety, we are sure that the Muslims of City University feel safer praying in the Gloucester Building rather than on the street and if the university feels that the building is unsafe for students, then what about the hundreds of Muslim and non-Muslim students who have lessons in the same building until 5:50pm every day. Surely if the building is unsafe for Muslim students to pray in, then it must be unsafe for all students to study in.

We are fully in support of the University’s ambition of bringing people together and are actively pursuing this alongside the Students Union; however the use of a multi-faith room will not accomplish this. The target of improving relations in our diverse community will not be accomplished by driving a vast section of students and staff away from comfortably practicing and integrating their faith at University, as they have done for many years. Though we fully understand and appreciate the endeavour of the University in wanting to bring together people from all walks of life and thereby increasing social cohesion, the reality is, these recent changes will do nothing more than have a counter-productive effect. As it stands, we would like to think that there is an amicable rapport between all faiths and societies at the university. But, if circumstances arise – which they inevitably will – that each society has to restrict it’s time in the multi-faith rooms to accommodate other societies at the detriment of their beliefs and practices, naturally, there will be a breakdown of good-relations between the very people that the university seeks to socially cohere.

As Muslim students at the university, we seek to maintain a good relationship with all our colleagues, as we have done so thus far, without bringing detriment to our religious beliefs and academic performance. In offering prayers in the Gloucester Building, we have been successful in this endeavour for many years. And in essence, the university has also been free of any difficulties from students in accommodating the observance of the Friday prayer. But as last Friday demonstrated the lack of accommodation from the university – though well intended – has only served to diminish what was, and can, once again be, a thriving atmosphere for all staff and students at City University.

We take this opportunity to sincerely apologise to fellow students and staff inconvenienced by our performance of the prayer outdoors last Friday. In keeping with our faith’s teaching of good manners and etiquette, we attempted to make room for people to pass by with ease, but the sheer volume of Muslims needing to pray rendered this near-impossible. We apologise once more for any hassle and ask that you understand, it is never our intention to cause disruption. But, as Muslims we regard our faith and the performance of religious duties as more important to us than anything, and since the facility enabling us to do so has been locked, we are forced to move to the only space large enough and accessible enough to accommodate the Muslim students and staff.

In closing, we would like to reiterate that the Jumu’ah prayer held on Friday was not a demonstration, but rather it was the Muslins of City University fulfilling an obligatory requirement of their religion. We would like to restate our request to the university to have the Gloucester Building Prayer rooms made available to us once more – at least until an adequate separate facility, catering to the needs of hundreds of Muslims students and staff can be found.
